University graduation and success

United States Guide

The US admissions process is uniquely holistic, evaluating your academic rigor, testing, extracurricular impact, and personal character.

Admissions Overview +

Colleges look at your entire high school journey (Years 10-13). They evaluate your transcript, recommendation letters, essays, and extracurricular involvement to build a diverse class.

Standardized Tests (SAT / ACT) +

While many universities are currently test-optional, strong scores can still enhance your application. The SAT focuses on Math and Evidence-Based Reading/Writing, while the ACT includes a Science section.

Extracurricular Expectations +

US colleges value depth over breadth. They look for leadership, sustained commitment, and impact in a few areas rather than participation in dozens of clubs.

Application Timeline +

Applications open in August via the Common App. Early Action/Early Decision deadlines are typically November 1st, while Regular Decision deadlines fall in early January.

United Kingdom Guide

UK admissions are almost entirely academic. You apply for a specific course (major) from day one, and universities evaluate your specific aptitude for that subject.

UCAS System Explained +

UCAS is the centralized portal for UK applications. You can apply to a maximum of 5 courses. You write one personal statement that goes to all 5 choices.

Personal Statements +

Unlike US essays, the UK personal statement must be highly academic. Around 80% should focus on your chosen subject, books you've read, super-curriculars, and why you are prepared for the course.

Subject-Specific Admissions +

Universities often set specific entry requirements (e.g., Excellence endorsements in specific NCEA subjects). Oxford, Cambridge, and some medical programs also require specific admissions tests and interviews.

Application Deadlines +

The deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, Medicine, Dentistry, and Vet Science is mid-October. The standard deadline for the majority of other courses is late January.

Australia Guide

Australian admissions are straightforward and numbers-driven, making it a highly predictable and popular option for New Zealanders.

ATAR Pathways +

Australian universities use the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). NCEA Level 3 results are automatically converted to an equivalent ATAR score during the application process.

Direct University Entry +

If your converted score meets the published minimum ATAR for a degree, and you have completed any prerequisite subjects, you are generally guaranteed entry.

Application Portals +

Applications are managed by state-based centers (e.g., UAC for New South Wales, VTAC for Victoria, QTAC for Queensland). You submit your preferences through these centralized hubs.

Timeline & Intakes +

The Australian academic year aligns closely with New Zealand. Applications usually open in August, with main offers released in December and January for a February/March start.
